A budding 'Buddhist' center

Sirpur, in the state of Chhattisgarh, is located at the bank of the holy Mahanadi river. The ASI has discovered a Buddha Vihar, including a Buddha statue, dating back to the 6th century, along with other sculptures. An intriguing aspect of the findings relates the presence of statues belonging to the Vaishnavite, Shaivite, Buddhist and Jain religion at one place.

The other discoveries include a 6-feet statue of a lady with a missing hand and Greek-like features, sculptures depicting Panchatantra, and unique hollowed-out cylinder with jaali-work carved out of a single stone.

The recent excavations have put Sirpur on the map of Buddhist tourist and pilgrim centres across the country.
