  Responsible Tourism

Responsibility and sustainability has been a way of life traditionally in India. Most Indians were culturally taught to cater to the society and environment as a part of their “daily living”.

Tourism and travel industry can be a major source of encouragement and revenue for hundreds of thousands of Indians particularly in the rural sector if responsible tourism of India is taken up in a big way and encouraged.

As Jost Krippendorf said, "to develop and promote new forms of tourism, which will bring the greatest possible benefit to all the participants - travelers, the host population and the tourist business, without causing intolerable ecological and social damage." Several government, quasi government agencies along with local population have set up and mobilised resources to work in unison to take this thought forward.

India currently should focus on key areas to take responsible tourism in a big way in the years to come.
1.
To respect local cultures - traditions, religions and built heritage.
2.
To protect the environment - its flora, fauna and landscapes.
3.
To conserve natural resources - from source to destination.
4.
To benefit local communities - both economically and socially.
5.
To minimize pollution - through noise, waste disposal and congestion.

India is emerging as a favoured Responsible tourism destination. The vast and diverse population with different segments of scope and activity is the main plus point. There has to be more synergy between tour operators, government agencies and non profit organisations along with local population. The aim must be to protect the heritage of our country which in turn will benefit both the local communities and the tourists.
